Perhaps you already knew that, but believe it or not, I've encountered a number of people who have that notion. Meteorology is not the study of meteors, so if you had that misconception coming into the course, erase it from your mind! So, what is meteorology? You're probably most familiar with meteorology as the study of the science of weather and weather forecasting. Indeed, understanding various aspects of the weather will be our focus for much of this course.
The Milky Way galaxy is a collection of billions of stars, including our planet, our moon, and our sun at its outer edge. Physicists and astronomers use the theories of physics to study the galaxy and everything in it, from the mysterious black holes that may result when giant stars collapse to the movement of electrons. While most meteorologists work full time, they often don't keep the usual 9-to-5 work day. Many entry-level and other field station weather forecasters work rotating shifts to cover the weather continuously, including nights, weekends, and holidays. They may also work extended hours during short-term, severe weather events. Other atmospheric scientists keep a typical schedule, though researchers may work extended hours on particular projects.
