Northbound traffic opened at am on 29th July, Traffic on the old A3 was stopped at am, with the last vehicle passing through the lights with the A at am, after which an engineer put up diversion signs. By am, cones had appeared immediately after the turn to the National Trust car park, at which point the old road through the Devil's Punchbowl became permanently closed. After a few days, the old road was already being cut up and closed with barriers.

It is one of the longest tunnels in England and is part of a four-mile bypass of the Surrey village of Hindhead. Mr Hammond said the Hindead Tunnel was one of the missing links in Britain's trunk road network. The tunnel, which will be used by an estimated 30, vehicles a day, runs under the Devil's Punch Bowl, a large hollow of dry, sandy heath, to the east of Hindhead. It is expected to cut journeys on the A3 by 20 minutes or more at busy periods. The old A3 is to be broken up and the land returned to nature, reuniting the Devil's Punch Bowl with Hindhead Common for the first time in almost years.

Removing traffic from the village of Hindhead itself has had a significant improvement on the air quality. Levels of nitrogen dioxide at Hindhead dropped below 40 micrograms per cubic metre when the tunnel opened in , with a further drop to 30 in This resulted in the AQMA being lifted in and the village now meets national standards.
Speaking on the tunnels anniversary, Highways England senior environmental advisor Henry Penner, who worked on the project said:. This has resulted in dramatically improved journeys for millions of local and long-distance drivers over the past ten years, and improved safety and air quality in the area.
