Iago then hid the handkerchief where Cassio would find it. Iago continues to inflame this jealousy. He encourages Othello to listen in on, and misinterpret, part of a conversation between Cassio and his mistress, Bianca. Cassio and Bianca discuss how Cassio obtained the embroidered handkerchief that he then gives to Bianca to copy.

After recovering, he orders Iago to kill Cassio. Desdemona cannot understand Othello's change of attitude towards her. Othello even strikes her in the presence of her relative, Lodovico, who has arrived as an ambassador from Venice.

As she prepares for bed, she talks with Emilia, singing to relieve the distress she feels at losing the trust of her husband. Meanwhile, Roderigo has begun to suspect Iago is not quite the friend he seems. Still Iago persuades him to attack Cassio that night again, to be able to court Desdemona. In the fight that ensues, Iago goes undetected and wounds Cassio. He then enters again as himself to accuse and kill Roderigo for the act of wounding Cassio.

Othello, a black general in the Venetian army although not himself a Venetian , falls in love with a senator's daughter, Desdemona. Custom will not permit their marriage so they elope. Iago, who has been passed over for promotion by Othello, and who is eaten up by jealousy, determines to destroy Othello, and anyone else he thinks has more than they deserve.

Iago convinces Othello that Desdemona is having as affair with Cassio the newly promoted Lieutenant , using Othello's colour, age and foreignness as reasons why she should be unfaithful. In a blind rage, Othello tries to have Cassio killed, and then he kills his wife. To protect himself, Iago kills his own wife Emilia, but not before she reveals the whole plot. Realising the terrible mistake he has made, and unable to live without the love he has destroyed, Othello kills himself.

Othello himself is one of Shakespeare's most likeable tragic heroes; a glamorous and courageous warrior, he is warm-hearted, hot-tempered and forgiving - and infinitely trusting of his fellow human beings. Why does Roderigo agree to kill Cassio? Does Cassio die? How does Roderigo die? Does Othello kill Desdemona? Why does Emilia die? Does Othello die?
