Measure and mark the center of your curtain panel and mark the spacing of your grommets before you start cutting the fabric to be sure you like the spacing and to make sure there is enough room, at least two inches, from the edge of your curtain to the center of the nearest grommet.

Adjust as necessary or as desired. By Ashley Garay. Before you begin to sew the side pieces to the center pieces, you need to think about how you plan to finish your seams. We used a 4- thread standard overlock stitch on a serger to finish our seams. You could use a zig zag stitch along the raw edges.

Before you hem the sides, the top and the bottom, you need to decide how you will finish your hems. Again, we used a 4- thread overlock stitch to finish the raw edge. Then, we sewed the hem in place with a standard straight stitch on our sewing machine.

We sewed right down the middle of the serged edge to maintain an even hem. Or, you could use a cover stitch using a cover stitch machine or a serger with cover stitch capability. Any leftover fabric can be used to sew decorative bands on towels to coordinate with your shower curtain.

When working with long pieces of fabric, such as with a shower curtain or any other type of drapery, it can be challenging to pin everything evenly. It helps to pin at each end and in the middle to start. Keep subdividing the distance between the pins until you have the entire length pinned in place. When commenting, your name will display but your email will not. NOTE: Before you cut your fabric, pay attention to any directional prints.

For example, both our Humming Birds and Dandelion prints have a definite direction. Weird thing though: I found the grommets in the section with the other window treatment supplies curtain rods, tie backs, etc. BUT I found eyelets in the sewing notions aisle.

They are the same size, same materials, same price, just a different name. Oh, and the eyelets were on sale. So, I bought those. Setting grommets is very easy, but you need a grommet kit to do it. A grommet kit comes with 4 different pieces: the setter, the anvil, grommets, and washers. You will need to provide the hammer.

Before I could drive the grommets through the fabric, I needed to create a small slit in the fabric where the grommet would be placed. First place a piece of scrap wood on the ground or a very sturdy table, then place the anvil on the wood.

The grommet sits on top of the anvil with the small, center tube pointing up. Slip that center tube through the slit in the fabric and slip the washer down over the tube, pointy parts down.

Hold the setter in the hole of the grommet and give the setter a few good whacks with your hammer. The grommet should now be fastened together with the fabric in the middle. Repeat with the other 11 grommet holes. Hang the curtain and curtain liner on your shower curtain hooks and admire your work. They are worth the few extra bucks they cost. Even though there are several other patterns in the space, the shower curtain is the main graphic statement in our bathroom.
